    Generally, we recommend using either one of the first two guides below.

    If you are a nursing, social sciences or creative industries student, use one of the other recommended guides.

    • How to use a guide

      stack of open booksGuides are generally divided into three columns: 
      Source type, Reference list example, In-text citation example

      Follow these steps:

      1. Locate the type of source you are referencing.
      2. Look at the examples given for that type, both the full reference and the in-text citation.
      3. Consider any variations, e.g. number of authors, online versus hard copy, edition etc.
      4. Find the equivalent elements for the source you are using, e.g. author, title, date...
      5. Write your in-text citation and full reference for your source, copying the same format as the guide.
      6. Check you have included all the correct elements for that source type, and that you haven't added any elements that aren't needed. 
      7. Check you have used the correct punctuation, as demonstrated in the guide, e.g. italics, Capital Letters, commas, full stops etc.
