How do I reference?

In the next few sections we look at how to create references* for particular types of sources, including books, webpages and articles.
First though, let's take a look at:

• the two parts to referencing
• punctuation
• where to find publication details
• referencing guides

* please note, in this part of the course, the referencing examples use direct quotations. This is to keep things simple while you are learning. However, paraphrasing is often preferred. You will learn about this in a following section.

• Punctuation

  An important thing to note when learning to reference is, punctuation matters!* The correct elements of the reference, e.g. author, title, date etc, are essential, but so is the format of these. 

  Every referencing style has its own formatting rules. Always notice the small details, e.g. when to use italics, Capital Letters (or not), commas, colons, parentheses etc. You don't need to try and memorise all these. Your referencing guide will give you the template to follow (more on this below). 

  * Note, expectations regarding formatting accuracy may vary depending on your tutor and course level. But keep in mind that the format of references is usually taken into account when marking the referencing component of an assessment.
