Minutes for December meeting
Notes from the first iPad user group meeting
Mark Caukill couldn't demo apple tv but discussed options for sharing screen via tether. Windows will soon have app to allow screen sharing via pc. Apple tv to be put in specific rooms Stephen looking for people to identify high use rooms. A211, Sarah mentioned a room in F block
Beth Mills demo,ed use for workshop out around the country. Looking at a plant I'd app for German plants and making an nz equivalent. Doc keen to support. Contacted app publisher to explore options for using theirs as basis. Possible sources of funding. Ako Aotearoa could support if wrapped into research about impact on teaching and learning. Think big, not just local but international. Clare mentioned UNITEC lecturer doing something similar
General discussion about simple app development ideas
Craig Agnew did demo of videoing performance work using cam app, then using iMovie to edit. Very easy and good but compressed quality. Gt quality just using iPad inbuilt mic and iPad on its own stand. Nice mention of David Bouds process for teaching students to calibrate their review of their work against teacher review. Recorded separate track over with teacher feedback and student did theirs as a separate track and can compare.
Process = record, student watches video once then records comments, then teacher watches and records comments.
How to then make available? Load 2 separate videos with teacher or student voiceovers to YouTube using private or unlisted option. Export to GarageBand so they can listen to tracks as they like but need GarageBand app or softw and files are large.
GarageBand demo
David Sturrock mentioned 5 pads available next yr for projects involving student use of iPads. Start thinking about ideas - a simple project proposal form to follow shortly. Martin mentioned that if project goes well then could just get more iPads, while the set of 5 are circulated to other projects.
Sandra Dyke demo of using moodle and google site and docs to track project progress and give feedback. Sandra makes extensive use of Google docs & sites (especially sites template for projects) and students add their progress reports and outputs online. There was an extended discussion on use of cloud services such as googleapps vs ms live etc. Also Dropbox, box and google docs as synching and file storage/sharing options. Stephen Tanner talked about improved NMIT storage capacity and NMIT Drop box equivalent coming next year (Octopus?).
Sandra also using scan app docscanhd to photograph and store files. Free app but limited to 3 pages and no OCR.
Use of conferencing and google docs. Aaron Steele example and Clare doing the same e.g. here (and happy to help anyone wanting to know how to set up something similar). Sarah Fraser keen to explore for her theses work with supervisor in oz.
