Work through the following steps within the first week of the course to make sure you know how the course will run, what is expected of you and who can support your learning. This should only take you an hour or so - then get into the action within the course topics.

Step 1: Make sure you know how to use NMIT Moodle

Make sure you have updated your profile and feel comfortable finding your way around this course and using the online tools. The Student Guide to NMIT Moodle resource can help if you're new to Moodle.

Step 2: Find out what is expected of you

Read through the entire course overview section of this course. Ensure that you familiarise yourself with the Course handbook and the Assessments section, particularly the Assessments overview. This information is also reflected in the Learning path, which you should use regularly to guide you through this course.

Step 3: Find out who can help you

Your tutor's contact details are provided at the top right-hand corner of the page, although it may have moved to the bottom of the page if you're viewing this on a tablet or phone.

You can contact your tutor by using the information provided in this block, however there are other ways to keep in touch with your tutor and classmates while working online, such as:

  1. the News and announcements forum, which your tutor may use to post information
  2. and the General discussion forum, where you can start and engage in conversations with anyone on the course

Develop your personal learning network: Another method of soliciting help and feedback is to reach out to your peers - be they colleagues, fellow learners or friends. This feedback can be more formal, some of the discussion forum activities for example, or someone reading and commenting on a piece of written assessment, or might be someone helping you understand a concept you’re having trouble with.

Keep in mind that this learning network is not confined to the course space. You can use tools like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn or other online communities to connect with other learners, practitioners and experts in your field of study.

Step 4: Begin the course

Once you've read the entire Course overview section and completed the introductory activities, you are ready to get underway with your study. You can begin by navigating to the 'Course sections' tab and starting with the first section.

Good luck on your learning journey.
