Snip: How to take a screen shot of an area

On this page:

  • Open the document you want to capture
  • Open the Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool Program
  • Taking a snip
  • Annotating the snip

Open the document you want to capture

  • Open the document that you want to capture part of, it can be any document, web page, Moodle course, video, etc...
  • Have the area you want to capture in front and visible to you.
  • Consider if you want to capture area space around the intended area. This can help place the snip when others are looking at the document.

Open the Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool Program

Windows has two snipping tools, both are very similar but have small differences in functions. both work the same for what we are trying to do.

Either open Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool, if the icon is on your windows bar or type into the windows search bar "snip" and open the program.

Searching for Snip.

Taking a snip

Click 'new' and drag the box over the area you want to take an image of.

You now have in your copy memory the image you just drew around. CTRL + V to paste this image where you desire.

Or click on the save icon to save the image so it can be opened in another program.

Note: there is the option of delaying the snip process when you click on new, to capture menus and other things that might not stay open. use the small down arrow by new or click on Delay to select a short delay before the window is frozen to drag the box.

Annotating the snip

Once you have the snip, there are tools at the top to allow you to draw and highlight the snip to emphasise and draw attention to.
